For the past several years, the KEI Network has explored the great challenges shaping our future—from artificial intelligence and democracy to sovereignty, creativity, and human relevance. Yet every exploration eventually leads back to a more fundamental question. Before we can understand the world around us, we must better understand ourselves.

That realization inspired this new series, Mysteries of the Mind. Rather than looking outward at the forces transforming society, we will occasionally turn inward to explore the remarkable mystery each of us carries every day: consciousness. How did we become aware? What is the self? Why do thoughts, memories, imagination, and meaning emerge from the physical world?

The article that follows does not claim to answer these questions. Instead, it proposes a hypothesis that weaves together ideas from physics, biology, neuroscience, evolution, and philosophy. It suggests that consciousness may not have appeared suddenly, but emerged through billions of years of increasing organization—beginning with the universal principle of attraction, shaped by probability and evolution, and culminating in the human capacity to reflect upon ourselves.

Whether this hypothesis ultimately proves correct is for science to determine. Its purpose here is more modest: to encourage curiosity. Every significant scientific breakthrough began with someone willing to ask a worthwhile question. Perhaps the greatest mystery is not simply that we are conscious, but how the universe, through us, became capable of asking that question in the first place.

How Did We Become Conscious? From Attraction to Awareness

For most of my life one question has quietly accompanied me: How did we become conscious? I am neither a physicist nor a registered psychologist. I am not qualified to speak with the authority of either discipline. Yet curiosity has never respected professional boundaries. Many of humanity’s greatest discoveries began with ordinary people asking extraordinary questions, and consciousness remains one of the greatest mysteries of all.

Neuroscience has taught us an extraordinary amount about the brain. We know that billions of neurons communicate through immense electrical and chemical networks, and we can observe the regions involved in memory, language, perception, and decision-making. Yet one profound question remains unanswered. How does electrical activity become the experience of seeing a sunset, hearing music, remembering childhood, or falling in love? In other words, how did matter become aware of itself?

The Beginning: Attraction. The search for an answer may begin much earlier than the human brain. Long before life appeared, the universe was already governed by relationships. Among the four fundamental forces of nature, electromagnetism occupies a unique role. Gravity gathers matter into stars and galaxies, but electromagnetism allows atoms to attract, bond, and form molecules. Without it there would be no chemistry, no DNA, no living cells, no nervous systems, and ultimately no conscious minds.

Physics explains these interactions without attributing awareness or purpose. Opposite charges attract because that is how nature works. Yet this simple law accomplishes something extraordinary. It allows matter to organize itself into increasingly complex structures. Perhaps attraction is not the origin of consciousness itself. Perhaps it is the origin of the organization from which consciousness eventually emerged.

Organization Changes Everything. Throughout nearly fourteen billion years of cosmic history, the laws of physics have remained remarkably constant. What has changed is the organization of matter. Hydrogen and oxygen combine to produce water, yet neither hydrogen nor oxygen is wet. Wetness appears only when immense numbers of molecules interact. Scientists call this an emergent property—a characteristic that cannot be understood simply by examining the individual components.

Nature repeatedly follows this same pattern. Atoms become molecules. Molecules become living cells. Cells organize into multicellular organisms. Organisms develop nervous systems. Nervous systems evolve into brains capable of reflection. At every stage in this continuous process, increasing organization produces capabilities that could scarcely have been predicted from the simpler structures that preceded them. Consciousness may represent the highest emergent property yet discovered.

Probability: Nature’s Silent Architect. Organization alone, however, does not explain evolution. Running quietly alongside increasing complexity is another universal principle: probability. Random mutation continually introduces new possibilities while natural selection preserves those organizations best suited to survive. Evolution is therefore neither entirely random nor completely predetermined. It is a continuous exploration of possibilities in which successful forms persist while unsuccessful ones disappear.

Science itself operates in much the same way. Rather than claiming absolute certainty, it continually tests hypotheses against evidence, refining our understanding as new discoveries are made. Perhaps consciousness is one of the remarkable outcomes of this ongoing evolutionary search.

From Organization to Awareness. This brings us to the central hypothesis. No physicist suggests that atoms possess awareness, nor does neuroscience claim that electromagnetism produces consciousness. The hypothesis proposed here is different. It is that attraction made organization possible; increasing organization made increasingly sophisticated information processing possible; and, over billions of years, awareness gradually emerged from that growing complexity.

Living cells respond to chemical signals. Plants orient themselves toward light. Animals integrate sensory information and adapt their behaviour. Human beings remember the past, imagine the future, and reflect upon their own existence.

Rather than representing disconnected events, these developments may reflect successive stages along a continuum of increasing organization. At some point—perhaps gradually rather than suddenly—awareness became consciousness, and consciousness eventually became self-awareness. Whether this hypothesis ultimately proves correct remains unknown. But it offers one possible way of understanding how consciousness could emerge without requiring an abrupt break in the evolutionary story.

The Hard Problem Remains. Most neuroscientists explain consciousness as an emergent property of extraordinarily complex brains. Stanislas Dehaene’s Global Neuronal Workspace Theory proposes that consciousness arises when information becomes widely available across the brain, while Giulio Tononi’s Integrated Information Theory suggests that conscious experience depends upon how richly information is integrated within a system.

These theories explain many experimental observations and continue to advance our understanding of the brain. Yet philosopher David Chalmers reminds us that the deepest question remains unanswered. These theories explain how information is processed, but not why those physical processes should produce subjective experience. Why should electrical activity become colour? Why should chemistry become love? Why should neural activity produce the feeling of being you? That mystery continues to challenge both neuroscience and philosophy.

The Universe Reflecting Upon Itself. If consciousness is indeed an emergent property of increasing organization, then evolution tells a remarkable story. The carbon atoms in our brains were forged inside ancient stars billions of years ago. The oxygen sustaining every breath existed long before life appeared on Earth. Nothing fundamentally new was added. What changed was the way those same elements became organized.

Seen in this light, consciousness is not separate from nature but one of nature’s greatest achievements. Through conscious minds, the universe remembers its past, imagines its future, creates works of beauty, asks questions about its own existence, and chooses among possible futures. Perhaps that is what it means to become conscious.

Wonder Before Certainty. Science has always advanced by asking better questions rather than defending final answers. Gravity, electromagnetism, relativity, quantum mechanics, and genetics all began as mysteries before becoming fields of scientific understanding. Consciousness may represent the next great frontier.

Whether the hypothesis explored here ultimately proves correct or not is less important than remaining willing to ask the question. Curiosity has always been the engine of discovery. If attraction is the principle that allows the physical universe to organize itself, perhaps consciousness is the highest expression of that organization. Through consciousness the universe does more than exist. It begins to understand itself.

Perhaps the greatest mystery is not simply that we are conscious. It is that, through us, the universe has become capable of asking how it became conscious in the first place. – Editor
