Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! – Isaiah 5:20

Can Putin’s madness be ended and civility returned? Dave Yager had it right when he posited HERE that the world had lost its mind. He was referring specifically to energy, but the diagnosis was apt, timely, and fitting for a broader diagnosis.

It is tempting to play the blame game as to who is responsible for the globe’s many messes right now. Putin, for example, made no secret of his frustrations and ambitions for many years. Few listened. Even fewer acted – think “red line”. But having ignored Putin is but a symptom of overconfidence, misplaced values, and the short-term objectives of corporate and sovereign leaders.

Leaders were naive in the sense of believing that “history” was over. That Covid – and Putin, were simply distractions from the real issues of ESG: climate change, suffering victims, feelings, and intolerance; greed and capitalism. That a post-modern utopia had arrived featuring statism, GI and AI; a future dedicated to altruism. Their naivete set us up for the tipping point, the rot in Russia:  the launching of a killing field in the Ukraine and a huge refugee crisis, exposing dumb energy policies exacerbating the impact of rising inflation, and making real the threat of nuclear and a world war.

Our column to the right is a weekly monitor of “the forces and sources of change”. Highlighted are those now most “serious” – the Energy Transition and Inflation. Missed are Defense – from autocracy and the need for Prayer – for those suffering in the Ukraine and those in Russia “Who know not what they do”.

Andrew Cohen in his editorial “Ukraine forces moral clarity on the world” HERE aptly concluded, “Now, as the threat of nuclear war returns, so does a more serious culture, rinsed of superficiality, self-indulgence and hyperbole.” – Editor
