The public is weary and I’m wary. Weary of winter, isolation and mandates. Wary of the uniquely Canadian truckers protest that is defining the winter of 2022 as one of discontent. Is Canada at a turning point, a tipping point, or both? Last week’s webinar featured a discussion of the protest and how best to manage conflict in a democracy with its defining principles of free speech and public assembly. The consensus was that lawful protest is endorsed; that fringes must be tolerated. That listening is essential; but that lawlessness is unacceptable.
Some of us are just plain weary of alarmists who cite extreme events – yes, even protests, as indicative of trends and existential crises. Weary of doomsday proclamations of coastal living and wary of asteroids headed our way. I’m personally weary of lingering bad losers like Trump and creative conspiracies ranging from Trudeau’s lineage to Yoko Ono’s bedfellows. And then there are the Flat Earth proponents and those citing Aliens in our midst. And there is the ever present intrusion of advertizing interrupting sports – namely the Olympics and shows – like Big Bang Theory. Consider also 5-G, everything China, and Peng’s turnaround. Putin’s puffin and huffin with tanks and natural gas. Iran and North Koreas’ offending nuclear pursuits. There is too the “weaponizing” of minorities, white privilege, and persistent claims of racism. Yet the pan-Canadian burning of churches remains ignored. Hypocrisy! Wokis me!
To be blunt I’m weary and now wary of “public” experts – the backtracking of poor data and even more poor research based mandates and associated media hype. But…hope burns eternal. Father Lib has reintroduced Bill C-11 proposing to grant the CRTC censorship authority to fix it all – purging misinformation, conspiracy nonsense, and restoring information “normalcy”. While focused on institutional broadcasting, I’m wary of any utopian solution. – Editor
