Urbanization Shaping Alberta’s Tomorrow – Challenges and Solutions

Several of our newsletters and dozens of the associated webinars this year have explored the urban impact of urbanization. The other side of the impact is what is being left behind – the plight of rural communities. This past week I had the occasion to get-out-of-town, starting with a pre-dawn drive into a prairie sunrise, enjoying the transition through flat, fields of farmland to the rolling hills of forests and lakes in Alberta’s Northeast. The awakening was followed by a meeting with rural small businesses and manufacturers including a few farmers, then lunch and a tour with a small town mayor and CAO addressing the challenges of economic development, and wrapping up the day with a visit to a First Nations reserve and a chat with a bleacher of high school students.

After my journey, I shared my musing about the day triggering a broad exchange of viewpoints among several in the Network.  I’ll highlight the conversations but also an underlying thread of concern about “Can and should dying communities be saved? When is enough enough? Is economic development an imperative?”

Transition Beyond Traditional Energy. The need was stressed for an exhaustive understanding of the impact of the shift away from dependency on oil and gas – acutely felt in rural areas, emphasizing the importance of embracing sustainable energy alternatives.

Rural and Agricultural Transformations. Concerns were raised regarding the impact of urbanization and technological advancements on rural communities and agricultural practices, underlining the need for innovative solutions, creative financing including public subsidies to sustain these vital sectors. Educational System Failures. Discussion of the inadequacies of the current education system in serving rural and Indigenous populations, the decline of discipline and dependency of labour, prompting discussion of comprehensive reforms to better address the unique needs of students and their communities.

Broader Concerns. Critical examination of issues such as military underfunding, deterioration of public services, and the sustainability of social services and health care confronted with homelessness and mental health issues, underscoring broader challenges facing Canada as a whole.

Economic Diversification. Participants stressed the urgency of diversifying Alberta’s economy and investing in sustainable energy exploration to mitigate global challenges and reduce dependency on traditional energy sources.

The dialogue didn’t end there as suggestions emerged on recommendations. I’ll share them but in doing so also express, that there are many who are of the view that urbanization shouldn’t be resisted; that the best we can do – and should do, is manage the transition. China is suffering a major real estate collapse since its development of what are now “ghost cities”. Rural areas in western Canada are dotted with ghost towns, towns once thriving on a resource boom whether it be gold, coal, and as energy transitions – oil and gas?  Any political platform should consider when is enough enough?

• Strengthen Rural Banking and Investment. Enhance access to banking and investment opportunities for rural communities to foster economic growth and development.
• Improve Agricultural Practices. Advocate for the adoption of advanced agricultural practices and technologies to increase productivity and sustainability in the agricultural sector.
• Reform Education for Rural and Indigenous Populations. Overhaul the educational system to better cater to the unique needs of rural and Indigenous communities, ensuring equitable access to relevant and quality education.
• Pursue Energy Diversification. Aggressively explore and invest in sustainable energy sources to diversify Alberta’s energy portfolio and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
• Policy Reform. Call for comprehensive policy review and reforms for addressing environmental and economic, technological and social innovations to navigate the complexities differentiating rural and urban living.

In response to the unique challenges facing rural Alberta, the exchange underscored the importance of collective action among rural constituents and strategic planning to drive meaningful progress for shaping a prosperous and sustainable future for all of Alberta. In conclusion, one might ask, “Why is the plight of rural Alberta’s so important?” Consider, the Province’s electorate is split down the middle, left and right, between Edmonton and Calgary.  Understanding and mitigating the impact of urbanization may decide the next election. – Editor@KEInetwork.net
