Last week  HERE  we learned of the extraordinary opportunity for Canada to develop policies and messages, technologies and practices for harmonizing energy, the environment, and the economy.  And, in our earlier webinar specifically about the People’s Republic of China HERE we learned of the country’s current circumstances and a bit on lifestyles. This Webinar will focus on ”The Way Forward” for optimum returns for Canadians from the Peoples Republic of China as well as emerging for Western Canada throughout the Indo-Asia Region, specifically in goods, services, and technologies in the fields of agri-foods and energy.

MODERATOR

Chaired by Gar Mar the current President and CEO of the Canada West Foundation. Gary is an accomplished and respected leader, Gary brings deep experience in government and business, and established expertise in natural resources, trade and investment and human capital. Prior to joining CWF, Gary served as President and CEO of the Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC). Gary served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Province of Alberta from 1993-2007 where he held several Cabinet portfolios – Community Development; Health and Wellness; Education; Environment; and International and Intergovernmental Relations. He has also served as the Official Representative (Minister-Counselor) of the Province of Alberta at the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C., the Province of Alberta’s Representative in Asia from 2011 to 2015 and as an independent consultant for Chinese and Canadian companies seeking assistance with trans-Pacific trade and investment.

 PRESENTERS

   Lu Xu  Consul General Lu Xu took office as Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Calgary in September 2017.  Her diplomatic career began in 1991 and has rich diplomatic experience. Previously, she served as the deputy director of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and worked in the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Consulate General in San Francisco, the Embassy in the Czech Republic and the Embassy in the Slovak Republic.  Married.

   Gordon Houlden  Director Emeritus of the China Institute, Professor of Political Science and Adjunct Professor of the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. Professor Houlden joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1976, serving in Ottawa and abroad. Twenty-two of his thirty-two years in the Canadian Foreign Service were spent working on Chinese economic, trade and political affairs for the Government of Canada including five postings in China. He also served at Canadian Embassy in Havana and Warsaw, and at Canada National Defence College. His last assignment before joining the University of Alberta in 2008 was as Director General of the East Asian Bureau of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, responsible for Greater China, Japan, the Koreas and Mongolia.  

Under Professor Houlden’s leadership, the China Institute focused on contemporary China studies, with an emphasis on Canada’s trade, investment and bilateral relations with the PRC, and Asian security issues. His third co-edited book on the South China Sea was published in the summer of 2021 by Bristol University Press.

  Jian Zhang  University of British Columbia: Okanagan as Adjunct Professor and appointed as a full SmartAg and crop genetics professor at Jilin Agricultural University (China) investigating plant-based protein and crop genomics for better food production, Dr. Zhang has 30 years of applied genomics, phenomics, genetic engineering, functional food, food safety, and agricultural related experience.Research scientist at North Labs.  and Equally fluent in Chinese and North American board or lecture rooms, Jian’s international experience includes a PhD (U of Guelph Canada, 2004), MSc (Weizmann Institute, Israel), and BSc. (Beijing, China). .      Jeff Kucharski  Adjunct Professor at Royal Roads University in the School of Business and a Senior Fellow with the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, with a special focus on the Indo-Pacific. Jeff spent almost half his working career in Japan in various roles including with the Seibu Group, Government of Alberta and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. As a former Assistant Deputy Minister at the Alberta Department of Energy, he was responsible for international energy policy, strategic planning and intergovernmental relations. In this capacity, he co-led various federal-provincial task groups on energy issues, led a major regulatory review of Alberta’s energy sector, and negotiated formal energy cooperation agreements with the governments of China and Japan to enhance energy security and expand energy cooperation.

Today his focused is on policy-relevant research related to international trade, the Indo-Pacific, energy policy, energy trade, and the geopolitics of energy. and has published peer-reviewed research in several international journals and with various academic institutions. He holds a Doctor of Energy Science degree from the Graduate School of Energy Science, Department of Socio-environmental Energy Science, Kyoto University in Japan and MBA and B.Com degrees from the University of Alberta.
