This morning I woke, rather awoke, to a CBC newscast from Glasgow bellowing a message that “… mankind as we know it is coming to an end!” Now that’s pretty serious I thought, though no less comforting as the follow-on message calling for “workers and youth to unite”. This message was alarming, honed well I thought by a couple of leaders presaging revolution and global conflicts of the 20th century.
Now I’m not one to exercise reflexive denial, but I am prone to get suspicious when “the end” is forecast calling for revolution. And I become particularly suspicious if action is called for to mobilize kids, and inspiring fear. These are the words of snake oil salesmen and starlets of the silver screen. Hired spokesmen. Hardly holding any rationale credentials. Of course there too are “scientists” with credentials but they too are often out of their depth other than having experienced the weather, but having no background in the new climate science.
What to believe? It seems to my me that it’s enough to proclaim that we…all of us, need to “respect the environment”. By that I mean, curtail tailpipe emissions and excessive energy consumption and stop using waterways as dumps and trash bins for plastic.
That message can be couched as a positive expression, something we can each embrace personally as an alternative to revolution, statism, and global bashing of yesterday, today, and – if not resolved, tomorrow. Alarmists calling for global action are tools for manipulating power and conflict. Leaders are needed for inspiring hope and personal responsibility.
My faith is in the universal spirit of mankind to survive and to recognize the value of one another. Already there are corporations in transition, voluntarily buying into reduced emission targets. I see it in collective markets emerging in renewable energies, innovation in hydrogen and LNG, and the newfound respect for nuclear. But as for people, well it’s easier to pivot as a company, as an industry, even as a government. But people? Well there’s the rub – as they continue to waste and abuse. Education can help. Taxes can punish and incentives encourage. And of course leaders can inspire, but NOT by inspiring panic and conflict.
So ignore the snake oil salesmen, the entertainers, the alarmists as agents for power, and think for a bit – what we, you and I, need to do as agents for our shared environment. – Editor
