Last week’s webinar HERE  HOMELESSNESS (Episode #1) – Exploring the fix and the future featured an interview of Tim Aubry from the University of Ottawa about who are the homeless and his research about Housing First as a comprehensive service for addressing an array of the economic, social, and personal issues confronting those with a chronic homeless problem. Several unanticipated insights emerged including the significant role of public programs in not preparing their clients for community, the critical role of personal AND community “agency” and early intervention for achieving success, the role of supportive programs in preventing recidivism, how the multitude of social agencies complicate the service system, the general lack of political awareness of the success of Housing First including that the social and economic cost of institutional services exceed those of Housing First, and how the shortage of affordable housing is contributing to this growing and international problem.

Who are the homeless and what assistance is effective … a US perspective

As we venture into an exploration of homelessness it is only apropos to get a handle on who are the homeless and how to address this growing and complex problem in our communities. In place of an editorial here is a single slide from last week’s webinar that summarizes the policy challenges for resolving the homelessness issue, and while they are specific to mental health, they apply equally well to all communities commited to prevention and integration of the homeless.

The problem is complex and the array of players involved warrants extraordinary collaboration. How are communities and the people affected addressing the challenges? Do communities really care?  Are there those among us who just give a damn and regardless of capitalism, regardless of reglatory authorities, just regardless – weigh in to make a difference? Who are they and why? That is the subject of this week’s webinar featuring an interview of Carol and Tim.

  Carol and Tim Kane have seen it all.  Tim – a retired lawyer, and Carol – a former project leader with Boeing upon retirement just couldn’t ignore the huge personal, social, and economic travesty infecting communites, not just where they lived but throughout much of the United States – and internationally. And so they took it upon themselves to learn and try to make a difference. This interview is about them – their story.  How people can make a difference in the lives of others enriching the communiities they care about. We wanted to learn more. Why and how did they get involved?  What have they learned?  Are they an exception – that is, are people – even those retired, taking up the challenge of reinventing their communitiy to help others over an above the promises of the welfare state.

Overview – Making A Difference

• Took in foster children who had aged out of the social services system and would otherwise have been homeless;
• Done outreach work for addicts in inner city locations including referral to rehab programs and supportive housing options;
• Worked at food kitchens and distributed food to the homeless;
• Co-founded Oxford House New Mexico which now has 17 homes in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, part of the nationwide network of just under 3,000 houses;
• Recipients of the Tom Fellows Award from Oxford House International for Outstanding Service to Oxford House;
• Directors on several boards that advocate for supportive housing initiatives as alternatives to homelessness and/or incarceration;
• Served on the Governor’s Behavioral Health Planning Council and the substance Abuse/Mental Health Subcommittee for four years;
• Carol serves as a member of her County’s Affordable Housing Advisory Commission, charged with administering a $6.3m general obligation bond for affordable housing.

Fusion Energy: where are we at?

 The Canadian Workshop on Fusion Energy science and Technology (CWFEST-2023) is proud to present 12 global experts on the latest news from the global fusion energy ecosystem on 24 October 2023.
