Last week’s webinar HERE https://youtu.be/_qiD7QgzpZI EPISODE #2 featured Trevor Lewington as Commentator and Perry Kinkaide as Host discussing the results of the KEI Network’s assessment of Alberta’s economic resilience and the effectiveness of its innovation ecosystem for the Province and its three Regions: Calgary, Edmonton and Other. Highlighted was the continuing progress evident in diversifying the province and regional economies but hindered by the province-wide role of the oil and gas industry. Primary measures of economic resilience are viewed as jobs and corporate investment. How the Regions differ stood out: 1. Calgary is now viewed as diversified with Edmonton particularly Education lagging, 2. Edmonton is more positive than Calgary about the role of government in economic diversification and innovation, and 3. Since 2021, there has been a widespread decline in the effectiveness of the innovation ecosystem, particularly in Calgary citing specifically Management Processes. Also discussed as noteworthy are the unique array of issues complicating economic development today: rising interest rates, the war in Ukraine, disrupted supply chains, post-Covid labour force, unabated inflation, political uncertainty, and divided opinions on the role of government at various levels.
