Tis been an extraordinary week, so much to share and a special moment to celebrate. First the good news drawn from our Watch column to the right. The column serves as an environmental scan of BIG issues we are monitoring. Let me know if we’ve missed anything and/or if you’d be interested in being a designated scanner.

A big item in energy specific to our continuing interest in nuclear, is the selection of a US firm’s design for Canada’s next nuclear plant – an SMR in Darlington, Ontario.

The increase in inflation continues to command headlines: the threat of rising interest rates, housing, energy, and food costs; labour shortages and supply chain constraints.

In the background is the rise of China, competing with the US, and what it might mean for Canada. Each of the four presentations in our CHINA NOW webinar is being released over the next four weeks through Troy Media. Our “Justa Chat” public webinar last week continued to focus on prevailing concerns about public protests between – and within, sovereign states, e.g.: Russia and Belarus, Khazakstan, and Ukraine; Washington wokesters; North Korea and an offending graffiti artist; Australia and lockup of tennis pro Djokivic; and increasing protests seemingly everywhere against Covid lockdowns.

Most of the protests are the byproduct of a common perception of a threat to personal freedom. We – all of us, have been and continue to be buffeted by information – and misinformation, triggering angst even fear of a threat – real or perceived, to personal freedom. We are sensitized – on alert, to detect events near and far, that signal change as a personal threat. Covid has served to heighten that fear.

Well I am a bit of a positivist, that we shape our perceptions. That the power of positive thinking is ours to seize. People tend to lean negative or positive by personal choice. Here is a simple example of choosing your perception. It’s been cold here and more snow than we’ve seen for some years. So the weather – along with Covid, is newsworthy, but usually discussed publicly with a negative twist.

It’s our choice to perceive the weather as good or bad news, both can exist simultaneously. It is probably obvious what is the bad news: frostbite, accidents, heating costs. But the Pine Beetle won’t breeding this year and ground water levels will be refreshed – good news for many. Also good news is that the outdoors is fresh, pristine, and grounds for staying home – romantic, warm, and with family. An extended holiday!

Before signing off I am compelled to share with you everywhere, a thrill that has radiated and warmed every Canadian’s heart. Our youth, Felix and Dennis last night won our first ATP Cup defeating team Spain.
