CANADIAN CONVOY APPEALS TO END MANDATES A few weeks ago we featured an editorial about freedom, governance, and special interests in a democracy. The timing was spot on. A convoy of trucks has now gathered in Canada's Capital from across the country as an appeal for the federal government to lift mandatory measures to contain Covid that are viewed as no longer necessary, and impeding their industry. The protest is setting a Guiness record as the longest convoy on record at 7.5km and comprised of some 50,000 truckers - many from sympathetic US neighbours. The protest has garnering $10M in financial donations and sympathy from citizens who see food security at risk. The gathering poses a threat to close down the Capital for as long as the protest lasts; some truckers say their food supply will last a month. Can the organizers keep the protest focused and check attempts to co-op the protest's purpose? Will the media give the gathering a fair hearing or focus instead on fringe extremes? How should Government respond? "Protesting" will be the subject of our webinar on February 3rd, and is sure to trigger discussion of how other nations manage protesting in the world where the internet and social media can mobilize and inform/misinform in an instant.
