Last week's webinar - Governing Data Management, was prompted by the broad impact data is playing in driving change. The webinar can be accessed HERE. The session featured several insights and provoking discussions:
- The speed of data adoption and siloed operations have challenged developers and regulators facing a lack of standards, talent gaps, issues of privacy, and rogue data-access practices such as ransomware, election manipulation, and rampant misinformation
- To date governments have delegated the regulation of data management practitioners to the profession with government intervention targeting unfair business practices and anti-trust options
- Privacy, trust, and government intervention appear less concerning to the public as services and products become more personalized/ customized
- Society needs leadership and agility for bridging extremism and facilitating progress in the face of so many challenges.

While Alberta has proclaimed for several years its commitment to diversifying the economy, Alberta is still viewed and treated by many as a petro-state, subjected to broad economic booms and busts not just in energy, not just in Calgary, but throughout the economy. The results of our semi-annual survey reflect the sentiment of many Albertans that while there has been progress in diversifying the economy AND reducing emissions, there is still a long way to go. The province continues to be subjected to extraordinary ESG pressures from climate change alarmists to European investors and various political aspirants.
The KEI Network's Zoom webinar on Friday October 8th 4:30PM MT will feature a moderated discussion with Robert Roach of ATB Financial and a follow-on exploration of just how far Alberta has come, has to go, and what the global energy crunch and commitments to fighting climate change may mean for Alberta.
