Finding Calm Amid the Chaos
In a digital world saturated with tension and turbulence, where the news cycle never sleeps and algorithms thrive on outrage, the pursuit of tranquility feels almost rebellious. As summer stretches into its languid days, a different rhythm beckons—a rhythm that invites us to slow down and embrace moments of quiet.
This season, marked by vacations and lazy afternoons, offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the incessant hum of screens and the cacophony of political noise. Stepping into nature, even for just a few minutes, can feel like a radical act of self-preservation.
At the end of May, I hit pause. I decided to dial down the intensity of our newsletter and introduced a series of "Justa Chat" webinars—informal, relaxed spaces where we explored the subtle yet profound impact of bureaucratic inefficiencies and celebrated the indomitable human spirit. The conversations were lighter, but the insights were no less significant.
This week, let's focus on tranquility, particularly as manifested in art and music—those timeless balms for a weary mind. Picture this: a solitary walk in the park, the sun warming your face, the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Or perhaps it's the simple pleasure of sinking into a warm bath, losing yourself in the lapping waves during a seaside stroll, or savoring the unfiltered joy of a child's laughter. Tranquility isn't an isolated pursuit; it's found in connection—whether through shared meditation, a quiet prayer, a gentle smile, or the comfort of being together.
The quest for tranquility is nothing new, but in today's hyper-connected age, it's taking on new forms. From AI-driven wellness devices that counteract loneliness to the resurgence of serene visual art, our tools for cultivating peace are evolving. Remember those "mood stones" from years past? Now, it's the calming blues and greens of seascapes and the understated elegance of tranquil paintings that adorn my walls or the gentle calm of Debussy's Clare de Lune or Avro Part's Spiegel im Spiegel, or John Lennon's Imagine subtly shifting my mood:
Contrast this with the art and music of today, often infused with the same rage and discord that dominate our headlines. The endless loops of election fraud allegations, violence, and natural disasters create a soundscape of stress. It's no wonder we crave stillness.
More and more, I'm finding solace in the act of tuning out. Even the comics, once a refuge of light-heartedness, seem tinged with the anxiety of the times. Tim Caulfield captured this shift perfectly in his book Relax, Dammit!—a title that speaks to the frustration of trying to unwind in an environment that seems hell-bent on keeping us wired.
In a world that never stops moving, finding stillness is not just an escape; it's a necessity. Kipling's wisdom in If—"If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs..."—reminds us that tranquility is not just a personal refuge, but a source of strength in tumultuous times. By cultivating calm within ourselves, we contribute to a more balanced, resilient world. So, take this break, savor the stillness, and let tranquility be your guide. Enjoy a break and please with me how you go about escaping the clash of public and personal interests. - Editor

Jeff Krehmer is a professional mechanical engineer with a plan to revolutionize the global energy network. The presentation expands on ideas from his book Infinite Resources – describing how we can use the temperature difference between the cold polar night air and the relatively warm polar oceans to generate more energy than humanity currently uses.
Rank #5. LEADERSHIP. Dr. Richard Sutton discusses Artificial General Intelligence - for better or for worse?. October 30, 2023. Access at KEINetwork.net Issue 133. Webinar's Video link HERE https://youtu.be/UAgMJUE_NHI
"Artificial General Inteligence - for better or for worse?" features Dr. Richard Sutton's keynote address for the DAMA Conference (Edmonton - November 2nd, 2023) and subsequent interview by the KEI Network HOST Perry Kinkaide. Dr. Sutton's leadership role in advancing Artificial Intelligence through the application of Reinforcement Learning is renown worldwide. The achievement of Artificial General Intelligence creation of a "Learning system", capable of setting and pursuing actionable goals - thus reflecting it as "intelligent". He is skeptical that super intelligent robots to control mankind would ever emerge but is concerned that governments are aiming to regulate the development AI far too early - that is, before they even understand their objectives. The interview concludes with Dr. Sutton's explanation of the Alberta Plan and the principles for guiding to the imminent advance AI for achieving AGI.
Rank #6. Justa chat with Allan Offenberger - NUCLEAR FUSION webinar. December 15, 2022. Access at KEInetwork.net Webinar's Video link HERE https://youtu.be/kPJEEEQcCuc
The KEI Network's webinar features as an introduction the interview of Dr. Allan Offenberger, Canada's world renown fusion researcher and advocate for the development of fusion for energy. The interview is followed by a moderated Q&A exploring the expected social, economic, and geo-political aftershocks of the world's transition to fusion. The expected 10-30 year transition off oil and gas for energy is viewed as generally smooth and benign.
